Preparing for your first career-guidance session

A checklist for new practitioners before meeting their first client.

We asked one of our founders, Nata Novoselova!

So, in the practice of any expert, there is a first session with a client.

You can study methodology for a long time, immerse yourself in various tools, master modern trends, train... but once you need to go to real people who need help in answering the question “Who to be?” And here most people have ... fears and doubts. And that's -- absolutely. Normal! It’s normal to be nervous and anxious when you have your first session as a professional.

I want to share 7 secrets [that once helped me and my colleagues conduct their first sessions].

Secret #1

It is important to sleep and feel good. We're very physiological. And good physical condition sometimes accounts for 50% of the success of any session [whether it's the first session or the 1025th session]. Take care of yourself and be healthy!

Secret #2

It is important to think through the script and blocks/modules of your first session. You're an expert. You're a consultant. In other words, you are the “conductor.” And on how much you thought through each minute of your meeting with the client depends a lot!

Secret #3

So that you do not let down any “technical” moments. If you’re having a session online, the laptop needs to be charged, the phone needs to be charged [sometimes the laptop... hangs and you need to move quickly to another device] and you check in advance that your Zoom [if you’re having a session through it] has access to your camera and your microphone.

If you are holding a session offline, you should make sure that everything is prepared and you have not forgotten anything for a meeting with the client.

Secret #4

More optimism and self-irony. With any expert, “different” situations can occur. We are all living people and ideal sessions with a client are not always [even with the most experienced professionals]. Keep a good mood and attitude in any situation.

Secret #5

Sometimes honesty and openness are the key to success. If you’re worried, tell your client at the start of the meeting that this is your first session as a professional and you’re a little worried.

I did exactly that in my first session.

It worked perfectly.

I also received support and inspiration from my client.

Secret #6

Be sure to keep a glass of warm water on hand. Anxiety and stress are often affected... the vocal cords [primarily], and a glass of warm water will help you regain your voice and ability to speak as quickly as possible.

Secret #7

Be sure to join some professional community where you can discuss your doubts, anxieties, experiences. Ideally, this is the first client case.

Good luck and let everything go well!
