21st Century Skills or What They Don't Teach You in School

Many parents pay excessive attention to school performance, overlooking those skills and competencies.

Important 21st Century Skills: What a Teenager Can Do for Life and Career

All parents want their child to step into adulthood easily, boldly, fully adapted. But modern school doesn't teach that. Moreover, the education system is not focused on this. We understand what children are taught now, what knowledge they will not give, what skills are vital, and where to get them.

In recent years, the education system in Russia has undergone serious modernization. In terms of technical support for schools, much has changed for the better. But the point remains the same. Children continue to simply transfer knowledge: the names of countries and cities, mathematical and physical formulas, historical dates. And usually there is no difference, in an ordinary school a child is studying, or he was assigned to a prestigious lyceum-gymnasium. It's the same everywhere.

Realizing this, modern parents spend money on additional education of the child - sports sections, art circles, English, music school.

General education and additional training are certainly important. The first gives the necessary basic knowledge, the second - develops and helps with the choice of profession.

But neither one nor the other will give the child the skills and competencies that are really needed outside of school. Owning a musical instrument will not help resolve conflicts constructively. The level of fluency in English does not guarantee happiness in family life. And the highest score for the exam, unfortunately, does not exclude the prospects of working for a meager salary under the leadership of a smug boss.

What really matters is what you need to teach your child to be ready for an independent life?

List of current skills and abilities of leaders and successful people:

• interact with reality adequately and adaptively;

• Building effective communication;

• be able to make choices and make decisions;

• be proactive;

• Have developed emotional intelligence;

• be able to set goals, think strategically;

• be able and not afraid to take responsibility.

The sooner you give your child the opportunity to develop and hone these skills and competencies, the better. And they will help develop in a psychological circle or in psychological training courses focused on adolescents.

What will they do for a child, apart from developing important skills and competencies?

• the opportunity to look at yourself and life in a new way;

Stop treating ourselves as victims of circumstances and come to understand that we are masters of our own destiny.

Without this foundation, any other knowledge is just information to learn. And the phrase that 95% of reality is psychology is not at all from a psychologist. This was said by one of the world’s greatest management and business strategy experts, Tom Peters.
