When we started working on the topic of career choice 10 years ago, we noticed that there is another topic that most parents and educators care about.
An excellent name for this topic was given by the Russian writer and linguist of the Catherine era Dmitry Ivanovich Fonvizin in his comedy Nedorosl. The main character Mitrofanushka says “I don’t want to learn”. The full version of the phrase “I do not want to study, I want to get married” is often used by education experts and experts of consulting professions (professionals, psychologists, coaches, tutors, tutors) in relation to lazy teenagers who do not like to study and do not please the environment with their academic success.
Globally, the request of parents is either:
He/she does not know where to go and does not want to study!
He/she does not want to learn and does not know who to be!
And here's the question about the chicken and the egg: "What came first?" Really!
Teenagers do not want to learn and therefore the task of choosing a profession and building an educational track for the future seems almost impossible?
Or does the realization that “I don’t know who to be after school” lead to a decrease in motivation to study?
If there is no definitive answer, then the best plan for any expert working with children is to work in two directions at once.
Which we do.
On November 10, Veronica and I will hold a free master class “I don’t want to learn!” and analyze three difficult client cases from our practice of working with children.
Each case is a separate story of a particular child and family, where learning becomes an obstacle, a barrier, a difficulty and always a cause for anxiety. For us, as educational experts, such stories are a professional challenge and an opportunity to make a happy ending happen in life, like in the movies.
When a parent comes in and asks, “He/she doesn’t want to learn,” any expert asks himself or herself:
- How do you teach me to love learning?
And is it possible at all to solve this very common life “rebus”. Motivational challenge is the main challenge of education in recent years. 3,000 years! Since the first schools appeared in ancient civilizations.
And our answer is no.
Love of learning is a feeling that arises in a combination of different circumstances and factors. It's like a big puzzle of 1,080 pieces. There's nothing we can do here.
But! As experts in the development of supradisciplinary competencies, we can and should develop effective learning skills in children, we must teach children to learn and easily cope with learning difficulties and fears.
I recently spoke to my schoolteacher, a very experienced and distinguished teacher, who said that the school, unfortunately, does not teach children the most important thing - the ability to learn. The school does not give the right to make a mistake. If you don't know, "Sit down, two!"
What happens in school with a child all 11 years, when he learns without learning and does not receive support, when he regularly becomes a participant in the sad picture of the outstanding artist Fyodor Reshetnikov “Again two”?
He intuitively...long and systematic, almost to the touch tries to find his effective and successful business training model that should lead him to the result.
Or (which is more likely) does not spend his time and energy searching for such a model, but learns as it should.
The analogy with business is not accidental.
When we educate people about entrepreneurship, we give the future entrepreneur a set of tools that people use regularly to achieve their goals.
Why don't they do that in school?
Why are children not taught in primary school to plan their time, prioritize their learning tasks (this is urgent and important, but it is not urgent or important), set goals and write strategies for achieving them?
The modern world sets a new trend - Life Long Learning. This means that we should be able to learn, our children should learn effective learning skills as early as possible.
There is no doubt, the topic of motivation to study and the development of effective training skills is one of the most promising from the point of view of business.
And the most ambitious in terms of the tasks that need to be solved here.
I want to end with my favorite quote on the topic: “If you fall asleep now, you will dream your dream, but if you study now, you will realize your dream.”
