Once upon a time, the world was full of professions that today seem exotic.
Do you remember the people who used to light street lights every night? Or the phone guys who manually connected the calls? These jobs have disappeared, and the reason for that is technology.
For example, book printers or telegraphers are entire industries that have been supplanted by computers in a matter of years. Manual labor has been replaced by automation.
Ice locomotives – who would have thought that before the advent of refrigerators, ice was one of the most valuable resources? Ice locomotives harvested it in winter and delivered it to homes, restaurants and warehouses to store food in the summer. With the advent of well-known refrigerators, the need for them disappeared.
What about the rat-catchers? In medieval cities, especially in Europe, rats were a real problem and the cause of many diseases. Then it was a health issue, now it is perfectly handled by disinfection and pest control service.
